This dig is near Stony Lake in Jackson County. The location has yielded 34 chipped stone artifacts dating to approximately 12,000 years ago. Among the artifacts recovered are 3 Gainey style fluted spear points. Gainey fluted points are Michigan’s equivalent of the famous Clovis fluted spear points found in the western plains where they were used to hunt mammoths. Mastodons and mammoths were living in Michigan at the time Gainey spear points were made and Gainey points may have been used to hunt them, but caribou are thought to be the primary game animal they were used on.
